The electric car has been around for a long time. Electric vehicles first appeared in the 1880s and became popular in the early 20th century. Eventually interest in them waned as more powerful cars powered by internal combustion engines became cheaper to produce as a result of mass production. For decades gas guzzling cars were popular until the energy crisis hit in the 1970s. It wasnt until the 1990s and really 2000s before electric vehicles again began being considered as viable modes of transportation.
The Hollywood elite were some of the first to jump in on the zero emissions and green vehicle bandwagon, in many ways helping to spur on the electric vehicle industry. Several celebrities make a point of showing up to awards ceremonies in electric cars such as when Ed Begley Jr. and his wife Rachelle Carson arrived at the 2013 pre-Oscar party in a black Chevy Volt. Today, several famous celebrities own and drive either all electric cars or gas hybrids. What follows is a list of celebrities and their all electric cars.
When Justin Bieber turned 18, his manager Scooter gave him a black Fisker Karma which costs about $100,000. The car which has a solar panel built into the roof goes from 0 to 60 in 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 125 mph. It has a range of 32 miles as an all electric vehicle using a lithium-ion battery but can also operate as a hybrid-vehicle which extends the range to 230 miles.
One cool feature of the Karma is the solar glass roof which is used to capture the suns energy to assist the batteries in powering the cars dual electric motors. After receiving the Fisker Karma on the Ellen Degeneres Show, Bieber removed the black paint and had the car chromed apparently making it so reflective that the Paparazzi have difficulty taking photographs of it.
In addition to Bieber, other celebrities who drive a Fisker Karma are Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Ashton Kutcher and Al Gore.
