Most of us, at some point have seen someone who has some sort of physical deformity that makes them different. We’ve selected these five people who were each born with such a rare condition that you probably haven’t seen anything quite like these body deformities before.
The Bubble-Skin Man
Imagine going through life covered from head to toe with thousands of tumors all over your skin. For Chandra Wisnu, this is no nightmare but a living reality. The bubble-like tumors first began to appear on Chandra’s body at the age of 19, then spread to his back by age 24 and by age 32 his entire body was engulfed in the peculiar looking tumors.
Chandra gets strange looks from people who have never seen him before but he takes it all in stride. “When people stare at me, I tell myself, it’s because I am good looking. I always try to look on the bright side.” The worse part for Chandra is the terrible itching he experiences in the hot humid tropical weather of Indonesia. Sometimes it gets so bad that the only way he is able to relieve the itching is to use the lit end of a cigarette on the troubled area!
The 57 year old Indonesian man known as the “Bubble Skin Man” has been searching for a cure for his ailment for the past 25 years. The search became even more important after Chandra discovered that his 32 year old son Martin and 16 year old daughter Liz both began exhibiting early signs of the disease. Thanks to Dr. Anthony Gaspari, a dermatologist from Maryland in the United States, Chandra may soon find relief. While no cure exists, the disease has been identified as Neurofibromatosis type I (NF-1), a disorder caused by a gene malfunction resulting in benign cancerous lumps.
The disease which only affects around 2500 people worldwide is genetic. According to Dr. Gaspari, there are treatments available which may improve Chandra’s quality of life and possibly prevent his children’s disease from progressing to the same stage as Chandra’s.
Chandra’s story was recently told on a documentary entitled “Bubble Skin Man” which aired on TLC.
